Six Pillowcases

 

My quilt guild makes and donates pillowcases to the Pike County Child Advocacy Center.  When we were filling out our UFO sheet for this year, I put "make pillowcases" as one of my goals.  I have lots of novelty fabric in my stash that I thought would work well for pillowcases.  Of course, I didn't just use fabric from my stash.  The woodland creature fabric and the butterfly fabric were bought from Hobby Lobby just for the pillowcases, as were the gray and pink the accent fabrics.

The pillowcases are easy to make.  The hardest part, to me, is cutting the 27 inch x width of fabric pieces for the main body of the pillowcase.  My cutting tools don't easily accommodate that size. It only takes 2 seams to create the pillowcase.  I over-locked the long seam for stability.

Heartline pillowcase

This is a pillowcase I made a several days ago, I forget when exactly, and I forgot to take a picture of it.  It is made from leftover fabric from the Heartlines quilt.  Once I get the quilt back from the quilt shop, where it is currently serving as the shop sample for the Heart Strings pattern, I will keep it in the pillowcase.  If I give the quilt away, I will give the pillowcase with it.

Cascades pillowcase

I made this pillowcase from the leftover fabric from my Cascades quilt. I was going through my sewing room, trying to find project boxes to put my upcoming projects in.  I found that the leftover fabric from my Cascades quilt was still boxed up and hadn't been put into the main stash yet.  I saw that I had plenty of fabric left over to make a pillowcase, and since the quilt is a twin-size bed quilt, I thought it would be nice to have a matching pillowcase.  So today, I stitched one up really quick. 

I think that in the future I will try to remember to always buy enough fabric to make a matching pillowcase or two when I am making a bed quilt.  I think it looks really nice to have matching pillowcases on top of the quilt.  The trick will be remembering...

Moda Quilt Matching Pillowcase

I made a pillowcase to match my 2016 Moda quilt, Finding Mickey.  Ironically, I guess, the pillowcase doesn't have a Mickey Mouse to find.  It is made from the same fabrics as the backing and both borders, none of which was Mickey Mouse fabric.  I guess I should have used the Mickey Mouse fabric for the accent piece or the outer band, but I don't know if I had enough fabric for that anyway.  Oh well, it is a matching pillowcase, none the less.

Simply Gorjuss quilt top and pillowcase

The quilt top is 62-1/2 inches square and made from a layer cake, with a little yardage for the border. I finished it back on the 27th of last month, but I'm just getting around to posting it.  Things have been so crazy around here.  I was hoping to get this one finished by this weekend to donate to the blanket drive at church, but apparently that just wasn't in the cards.

Two weeks or so ago, I got the backing fabric cut, pressed, and ready to sew together.  I left it laying on the floor in my sewing room, so that it could be flat and not get creases in it from being folded.  Unfortunately, we got a lot of rain (Sunday night into Monday morning) and my sewing room flooded, which it had never done before.  So then I had a major mess to clean up including washing the fabric for the backing.

I got the mess mostly cleaned up (sewing room, laundry room, guest bedroom and bath) and then we got more heavy rain and flooding the following Sunday (day before yesterday).  Now I did have the good sense to not put the fabric back on the floor or anything else that I had already cleaned up, so there is much less to do now than last time.

I'm not really trying to get the sewing room put back together until we can find out why the water is getting in and stop it.  So this quilt top will just have to wait until another day and another blanket drive.  I hope normal sewing can resume soon, though.  It is depressing to not get to sew.

I did, however, make a matching pillowcase for the quilt, before all the flooding started.  It is made from extra backing, border, and binding fabric.

Memorial Day pillowcases

This year I decided to continue the tradition that I started last year, and make pillowcases for soldier/veterans for Memorial Day.  This year I planned ahead, so that I could actually sew the pillowcases on Memorial Day.  I made a point to buy different patriotic fabric this year, and not just get the same fabric as last year.

I really enjoyed making them.  I hope that whoever gets them will enjoy having them as well.

Pillowcases

My latest project was inspired by Memorial Day. I wanted to do something for soldiers/veterans on Memorial Day to celebrate the spirit of the day. I decided to make some pillowcases (pattern from Quiltmaker July/Aug '06) to be donated. I woman in my quilt guild is collecting them to donate to either active soldier or veteran, I'm not sure which. I didn't get too far into the process on Memorial Day proper. I bought and washed the fabric that day. I've worked on them when I had time between then and now. I just finished them today (with much complaining from my sewing machine). The guild meets tomorrow so they should be ready to donate then.
